Goals re:Equine Biz Surveys, Description of Market

Operating a horseback riding establishment is a complicated undertaking, which carries with it significant responsibility. Training facilities that provide a solid structure are becoming more complex to maintain and in many geographical regions, scarcer. Left-brain Training intends to conduct surveys, and package the information and requirements of three major equine organziations into comprehensive worksheets that make it easy for horse businesses to get an A grade from all! Therefore, Left-brain Training’s secondary target market are organizations such as:

1. the NATIONAL governing body, Equine Canada, which provides leadership for a viable equine industry and fosters an environment whereby Canadians achieve enjoyment from horses and sport excellence, while promoting education, safety and fair play

2. the 30 yr old PROVINCIAL governing body with a focus on the business aspects, and facilities. The OEF promotes safety, animal welfare and education as well as provides support and marketing opportunities for horse facilities, while also being committed to youth. In only five years the OEF has almost doubled its membership and now reaches 17,000 equine enthusiasts, including over 40 equine breed and discipline associations, more than 300 competitions, and 130 horse facilities.

3. the world renown Equine Guelph which has always focused on equine health, welfare, performance and safety across all industry disciplines, providing research and communications, about revolutionary veterinary enlightenments etc.

S-
Left-brain Training’s most important areas of competitiveness are creativity and a proven ability to successfully research and effectively communicate findings. These abilities must be demonstrated in effective, compelling queries while equine journalism skills are continually developed through self-review and other feedback.
W-
Left-brain Training’s most important area of weakness is a lack of equine credibility. The biographies of other Equine Journalists indicate that they are often high profile competitors/coaches, run Equine Businesses, are employed by an Equine Organization and/or are certified coaches. They also often write for several publications simultaneously, and one tends to see the same names over and over, indicating that it may be difficult to “break in” to the field. This will be addressed through networking, through a focus on newer publications more actively in need of content and through obtaining certification and employment/affiliation with established Equine Businesses.
O –
There is a need for knowledgeable horse people to document their expertise. Left-brain Training will use interviews and quotes to maximize fulfilment of this market need.
T –
The most important threat to Left-brain Training’s success is the overall threat to the publishing industry, which is the emergence of internet and alternative media sources, and which could reduce the market need for equine-related writing. This will be addressed by a focus on technological expertise, and a long term evolution to support needs in the alternative communication modes, such as podcasting, as well as a future focus on independent direct sales.
