Guest/Student Orientation Checklist

BEFORE ENTERING THE BARN
[ ] Obtain signed waiver from participants and accompanying guests
[ ] Discuss "the propensity of equine to behave in ways that might result in injury, harm or death to persons, other animals and/or property around them
- collide, kick, bite etc." safety circle of 8ft/3m (http://loguelikevogue12.blogspot.com/2006/07/abandoned-tour-notes.html)
- sometimes people can't control their horses, make mistakes or are negligent
[ ] ensure proper footwear (firm sole and heel)
[ ] ensure proper fit of client selected helmet (provide copies of 2 articles on helmets)

IN THE BARN
[ ]discuss the importance of following all the rules, all the time

Point out/review posted rules/signs !
[ ] show location of first aid kits, EAPs and fire extinguishers


Other items to mention:
[] No strollers in the barn.
[] Cell phones should be off.
[] No carrots/treats in pockets (store in office).
[] Nothing thru stall bars i.e.open the stall door to pat a horse
[] Never stand behind a horse
[] Never turn your back to a horse (unlike us, they see around their body)
[] Always use a lead shank (never double the chain)
[] Always speak to a horse
[] Ask the handler, like with dogs “is your horse okay?”
[] Always approach a horse diagonally to the shoulder not straight on
[] Always lead past on the same side as the person working on the horse
[] No sweeping around a horse you don’t know (broom below knees)
[] All spectators must sit on benches in arena
