business structure/insurance issue research

1) disability insurance is not offerred to those HANDLING horses, but riders can get it (my teacher always said we are more at risk on the ground around them than we are on their back)
2) disability insurance does not kick in for things like HEART ATTACKS because they are not accidents
3) the health benefits thing available to National Equestrian Federation members excludes car accidents. it is intended to be like a workman's comp.
4) most Emergency Travel Medical insurance EXCLUDES "professional" sports. Professional is defined as competing or being paid to do so.
5) the OEF does indeed have a group plan. i told the broker who provides it i want to work there AND eat my cake too...

"someone (and its not going to be me) needs to go to the Insurance Industry and make it clear that establishments that are certified are SAFER than those that aren't"*once you lease out a horse, that horse is then considered commercial use. Thus it would void the insurance on your boarders horse unless they insured them differently. I used to lease out one of by boarders horses for lessons. I won't this year because she can't afford the change in insurance.I neglected to mention that ALL the horses who board here must carry insurance, and that insurance must be appropriate for the work they do. We insist on seeing the documentation that the horse is insured, and make copies for our records. I know they could cancel the insurance and I wouldn't know, but I trust people not to do that. If they did, I believe it would nullify their contract with us.*carry coach/instructors Insurance."separate waiver for coach"obtain agreement with facility i.e.*http://www.intercityinsurance.com/Capri Insurance Brokers(specialists for all equestrians)including coaches, trainers, officials1-888-394-3330Louise McCleanlmclean.intercity@sympatico.comMike King

for some reason i have been reading my insurance policy from the USEF this morning. it does not cover liability arising from your business, or the practice or preparation for or participation in racing.
